12 Carve the taper on the end of the handle. Take care with the direction of the cuts, carving down the grain so that the edge of the knife does not tear in.

13 Thin down each side of the neck of the handle, working in both directions so that the cuts meet at the bottom of the valley (the concave curve) on each side. Take the first cuts starting at the bowl and work back towards the neck, and then carve from the widest part of the handle down to meet those first cuts.

14 As you get closer to the finished shape, be very careful to take fine shavings, being sure to stop at the bottom of the valley and not follow through, tearing into the grain.
